Quarter 2 Week 1 Assignment

For my assignment I decided to watch Bones S11 Ep10, to comment on the mise-en-scene of the last thirty minutes. This show is set in the modern-day, and in a professional setting. In this episode, 'Bones' (Dr. Temperance Brennan) and Booth (Agent Seeley Booth) investigate the death of a famous hockey player. Throughout the entire episode, there are several changes in lighting, setting, and costume. Although not set in a different time, the costume still can portray a little about the characters and their roles.

Throughout the entire episode, the setting constantly changes. First, it opens to Booth and Bones in a cluttered home, with a large arrangement of clothing and books thrown around. They are shown to be arguing, and their home is a direct representation of that. However, the most drastic change in setting is when they begin interrogating the third suspect. The interrogation room is completely empty with dark-colored walls, a stark contrast from the other two settings. When talking to the suspect, there is a large use of Frontality, as Booth is more often than not facing the camera head-on.

The scene begins with three-point lighting in almost all the scenes. The characters are well illuminated, save for a few shadows beneath their cheekbones and such. This lighting is consistently used, even when the two are in the comfort of their own homes. However, the lighting does change when the interrogations begin. The interrogation room is dark, with hardly any light coming in. At this point, low-key lighting is used. This is to make Booth appear more threatening, while also giving the entire scene a suspenseful or mysterious feeling.

The acting is mostly method acting, as each actor becomes their chosen role. For example, Dr. Temperance Brennan is played by Emily Deschanel. Deschanel is very energetic and comical outside of the show, while Brennan is shown to be very blunt and unable to understand jokes without some difficulty. This can also be seen in all the actors. Each one of them is to act as if they're all scientists, and they do so by using complicated terms and talking with a sense of arrogance or authority.

In this scene, there are also changes in wardrobe, specifically for Bones. At home shes clad in comfortable clothing. However, as shes called to the lab she then is shown with more sophisticated clothing and a lab coat. This symbolizes not only the strict environment of the lab but also shows the transition Brennan has when shes at home with her child versus when shes in the lab.
